On Tuesday 26th January, Tiverton's team of 4 visited Exeter for a crucial match in Devon's rapidplay competition. Having won the home leg by the astounding margin of 6-2, there was optimism in the air.

Simon Bartlett
Two one hour games (30 minutes on each clock) are played between each pair of players.
On board 3, Jon Duckham lost on time in round 1 but gained his revenge in the second match.
John Knowles, on board 4, managed to squeeze a draw out of a lost position in the first game and also drew his second game.
I am a good friend of our board 2 player.
On board 1, it was Simon v Simon - our Bartlett against their Waters. Bartlett won the first game and this meant that Tiverton could draw the match if our Simon could secure a second victory. Then we had controversy!
Bartlett found himself in a lost position but with his opponent clearly about to lose on time. Our Simon placed sportsmanship above the 'victory at any cost' mentality He put to one side the fact that chess is a war game. (Nigel Short's once actually said that the purpose of chess is to humiliate your opponent!) Simon Bartlett behaved like a gentleman and agreed a draw!
Result, Exeter 4.5 Tiverton 3.5 and it no longer seems feasible for Tiverton to retain the Newman Cup.
[I think Mr Bartlett should be hauled up before a Chairman's Committee! (Question: Is he a closet Exeter supporter?)]

ReportHey Fred Sure Chess is war but it is also a game .I think a bit of sporting behaviour should be encouraged not vilified. So I would say 0 out of 10 for warlike action but 10 out of 10 for sportsmanship. As our Aussie cousins say 'Good on ya Simon your a sport'
