More damage done to Bickleigh Bridge prompts calls for action

MORE damage has been caused to historic Bickleigh bridge after a vehicle collided with the parapet.
-
Bickleigh Bridge damage.
Devon County Council installed a raised kerb at the approach to the bridge last December at a cost of £8,000 following calls for action after the crossing was struck on the Tiverton side of the bridge by a number of buses, lorries and private vehicles.
Some residents wish to see a weight restriction put on the stretch of road, while others want traffic lights at each end, though county engineers say that would be unworkable.
It is not yet known exactly when the latest damage is to be repaired.
For more details see next Tuesday's Gazette.
Comments
If weight is not an issue for the bridge then why should it be restricted? If width of vehicles normally allowed on the road (with being a wide load with escort and suchlike) is not the issue. Then it is down to plain carelessness, something found in most collisions.

ReportIf vehicles are not able to use that route without continually damaging the bridge the should be a weight restriction put on it and any vehicle who does not should be forced to use the link road from Exeter instead as John Norfolk said 'if the 55 and 155 buses can manage there buses there why can't the heavy vehicles using Howden Industrial Estate'.

ReportAs the 55 and 155 buses manage to cross the bridge safely surely every else should be capable too? All of these buses are wide and some are full height and length double deckers.

ReportPeople should just approach the bridge with more caution.
The only action that should be taken is to take the driving liscences away from people who can't drive!!

ReportMost people go over the bridge and cause little or no problem. Yes it is somewhat annoying when you meet somebody halfway across, but that doesn't mean you have to go and bash the ****** thing to pieces.
People are sometimes thick, they just need to slow down a little and have some common sense when crossing it.
