A LORRY spilled about 40 tonnes of chicken feed across the North Devon Link Road after it overturned near South Molton.
The white Volvo lorry was travelling on the A361 from Tiverton when it tipped on its side at Aller Cross Roundabout just before 5pm on Monday.
Firefighters said the chicken feed spread across the entrance to the B3226, which leads to South Molton from the roundabout.
The B3226 road was then closed in both directions until 10pm.
Gary Henry, from Barnstaple Fire Station, said: “The whole load went across the road. There must have been about 30 or 40 tonnes of animal feed.
“The lorry had also knocked over the lamppost and the sign, so there was some live electrics to deal with.”
Adrian Granville-Smith, from Braunton, was driving behind the lorry, which was owned by Dave Pollard, at the time.
He said: “The lorry clipped the kerb. It was shocking for the person who was coming in the other direction.”
Mr Granville-Smith said that person was a first responder, who helped the driver with an injured arm.
Some diesel also spilled onto the road, although this was controlled using the chicken feed.
Police said the driver was initially trapped in the cab but did not suffer serious injuries. He was later taken to Tiverton Hospital.
There were no other vehicles involved in the incident.
