A HIGH achieving student from Tiverton has been invited to St James's Palace to collect a prestigious award.

Richard Salter who studies at Richard Huish College will travel to London on July 15 with hundreds of other young achievers to receive his Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award from DofE's Patron and Founder HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Gold Award Presentation (GAP) is a celebration and recognition of Richard’s achievements in completing his Gold DofE programme.  The GAP is a unique event and a fitting culmination to mark the hard work, determination and perseverance required.

The 18-year-old worked tirelessly through the five sections of her DofE programme over 12 months to achieve his Gold Award.  Activities completed to obtain the award included a four day expedition in the Brecon Beacons, a week’s residential at the Britannia Royal Naval College and many events through the Army Cadet Force, where he holds the rank of Cadet Company Sergeant Major, and is the senior cadet for Exeter and East Devon.

Richard said: “It will be a great experience to go to the Palace and meet the Duke of Edinburgh, and I am sure I will remember it for a very long time.

These experiences show what an impact doing your DofE can have, and can develop these skills needed for life."

Richard’s Gold Award helped him to further his expedition and leadership skills as he is now completing his Expedition Leaders Award.
