another vehicle which then hit an iron
post.
Fire engines, police cars and paramedics were called to
Tiverton Pannier Market just after 3.00pm today.
It’s thought the elderly man who was driving an automatic
Toyota Corolla went to brake as he drove beside the market near the Half
Moon Pub, but accelerated instead and crashed into a red Volvo estate.
The impact with the Volvo forced it to impact with one of the iron pillars at the market and a drainpipe, knocking it from its position.
Nobody was severely hurt and paramedics made sure everybody
was ok. Jane Elson who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the Volvo at the
time of the crash suffered minor injuries. Jane who owns a stall at the market,
and is also a nurse said: “I had just parked and I heard this bang, and then a
revving noise which didn’t stop and the car pushed me into the pole.
“I have a bruised knee and elbow so I’m lucky, as I was
just about to get out of the car and use the boot – if it had hit me then, it
could have been a different story.
“As for the car – I think I’ll have to start looking for a
new one.”
Market manager Chris Firth said: “Some of the concrete has
been damaged, but we hope we won’t need to buy a new pillar as they are from
the 1830s and they cost a lot of money."
Richard Parrott was passing by just after the accident and
supplied us with some photographs. He added: “I saw the ambulance go through the
market, so I went down to see what was happening.
“There were two ambulances, two fire engines and two police
cars there and police were questioning those involved.”
