THE Mid Devon Indoor Bowls Centre is inviting teams to participate in a new bowls tournament at the end of April.

To take part, you need a team of four or five players aged 16 or over who will be available all day on Sunday 29 April.

Dress is casual, bowls and shoes are provided and refreshments will be available all day. The Centre will be open on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout April for free practice sessions.

Peter Curgenven, executive committee chairman at the Bowls Centre said: "We're holding a tournament for people who haven't played bowls before or, if they have, aren't currently members of a bowls club.

"It's a free event and the winners will receive a trophy. The Bowls Centre will write a £100 cheque to the charity nominated by the winners.

"We're limiting the tournament in the first year to 16 teams and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so if you're interested in taking part you need to complete an entry form as soon as possible.

"If the tournament is a success, we'll be looking to make it into an annual fundraising event for charity."

The District Council has been working with the Bowls Centre over the last three years to develop its use and ensure the facility remains available for future generations. The charity tournament is the latest in a line of initiatives that include improvements to the social area and better promotion of the venue.

Deadline for entries is Wednesday 29 February. Entry forms and tournament rules are available from Mid Devon Indoor Bowls Centre, Amory Park, Tiverton, on 01884 243333 or from the Council on 01884 234930 or email ptucker@middevon.gov.uk
