CADETS from Tiverton are back from summer camp in Shropshire, where they joined hundreds of other young people in outdoor adventures.

Around 300 cadets from Devon Army Cadet Force, including those from the Tiverton detachment, were at the two-week summer camp at Nesscliff.

Activities at the camp included watermanship, climbing, abseiling, firing ranges and a three-day fieldcraft exercise, as well as a trip to Alton Towers.

Cadet Kieran Burton, 14, who attended Devon ACF's annual camp for the first time this year, said: "I really enjoyed summer camp — the best things were the shooting and sailing."

On the annual camp Cadet Lance Corporal Josh Greenslade, from Tiverton detachment, climbed Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales.

Cadet David Rawlings won the award for the best cadet in his platoon, and was rewarded with an hour-long ride in a helicopter.

Cadet Staff Sergeant Richard Salter achieved an award for the cadets' best senior non-commissioned officer and Cadet Corporal Jack Tooze was presented with a cup for being best shot in an air rifle competition.

Tiverton Army Cadet Detachment meet at the Cadet Centre in King Street, at 7pm every Monday and Wednesday. The detachment recruits anyone aged from 12 to 18.

Anyone interested in joining Devon Army Cadet Force, either as a cadet or adult instructor, should call 01884 252342 or visit the website at www.acompanyacf.co.uk
