The first Cornish Point-To-Point (Horse Racing) of the 2013-14 season takes place at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge and makes a great family day out, offers a great chance to do a spot of Christmas shopping at the Christmas Market and trade stands located under cover in the large exhibition hall at the same time.
Come an enjoy a day at the races where you can get close to the horses as they parade around the paddock, watch the amateur jockeys as they enter the paddock in a riot of colour. Take the opportunity to pick out your favourite and perhaps have a small flutter on it in the bookmakers' line. The meeting attracts horses from far afield, and some top people who are likely to be in contention for the national championships come the end of the season in June.
There is a form guide in the race card for each race which might give you clues to the likeliness of the horse to win or get placed. Before the start of each race the declared runners' numbers will be displayed on a board near the paddock, so you can check who is running in your race card.
When looking at the horses in the paddock, keep an eye out for a horse that looks attentive (ears *****ed forward) and bright eyed, with a good shiny coat, and fit with a well-defined rib cage and prominent muscles in the hind quarters.
The horses will then be paraded along the finishing straight before heading to the start line, and circle waiting for the start time published in the card. Once the flag falls you will have around 6 minutes of exciting action, jumping more than a dozen fences with horses jockeying for position over the 3 miles of the race. As they approach the final bend, on the final circuit the leaders will start to make their move (watch for the jockeys getting lower in the saddle and pushing the horses on). They will jump the last fence and race onto the finishing line near the paddock entrance.
Did your favourite horse win? Why not go and welcome the victorious horse and rider back into the paddock and the winner's enclosure. Enjoy the moment as the owner, trainer and jockey are presented with the trophies.
Now you can start studying the runners in the next race before they start coming into the paddock.
In addition to the racing the course offers locally made hot food and refreshments, a bar and a number of trade stands, who along with the professional bookmakers are all located under cover in the large exhibition hall.
There is excellent viewing from the course beside the finishing straight, from the hill overlooking the course and there are tarmac access roads to the car parks, so cars won't get stuck in mud. The racecourse is accessed from the A39.
Gates Open at 10:00am, the first Race starts at 12:00 noon. Entry is £10 for a car and driver, with £5 extra per passenger. Children under 16 enter free of charge.
