A TIVERTON man who was hit by a van while carrying out highway maintenance on a dual carriageway in Mid Devon is in a critical condition.

A second casualty also remains seriously injured following the incident at around 11am on the A361 North Devon Link Road in Tiverton yesterday.

Both men are in their forties and were working for South West Highways on the Barnstaple-bound carriageway at Gornhay at the time of the collision.

A third man also received non life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The three injured men are from the Tiverton area. The two more seriously injured, both in their forties, were airlifted to hospital.

"One was taken to Derriford, Plymouth, and the other to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital.

"The third man is described as walking wounded."

A 43-year-old driver of a van from the Saltash area was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken to Heavitree Road Police Station, Exeter. He has been bailed until May 20.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service Trust said: "A call came in at 10.57am and we sent one rapid response vehicle, one ambulance and two air ambulance crews to the scene."

The eastbound carriageway, which closed in order for the air ambulances to land, opened shortly before 2pm but the Barnstaple bound carriageway remained closed until the evening.
