Tiverton achieved a comfortable win in its first match of the season against Teignmouth in Division 2 of the Devon League.
First to finish was John Morrison on board 3 who, as Black, sacrificed a piece early on and established a knight on d3. He maintained pressure against his opponent whose position finally collapsed.
Simon Bartlett on board 1 won a pawn and then later won a second pawn leaving himself with a comfortable win.
John Knowles on board 4 obtained a creditable draw against a stronger opponent. John had queen and bishop with queenside passed pawns and his opponent had queen and knight with kingside passed pawns.
Ivor Annetts finished with bishop and knight against his opponent's lone king - a text book win in at most 17 moves. But he was unable to demonstatrate the win in the time available and had to concede the draw.

ReportI have talked further with John Morrison about his game. He put it into the fantabulous 'Fritz' program and realised that his opponent had missed a winning tactic. John had not seen it either. After this, John kept the pressure on and his opponent lost on time.
