Speeders nabbed in roadside checks

THE consequences of driving too fast were explained to motorists when they were pulled over in a police operation held to tackle speeding on Mid Devon roads.

Residents and councillors have identified the A396 at Ashley Rise, on the approach to Tiverton, and the B3181 Willand Road near Halberton, as areas where the speed limit is regularly broken.

Both roads have 30mph limits at the end of stretches of fast-moving traffic where a number of motorists were clocked at travelling at nearly 50mph.

PC Katie Rich, based at Cullompton Police Station, said: "Both have long stretches which give the impression the limit is higher than 30mph but when you are travelling at 40 and above it is dangerous because there are junctions and driveways, so it is an accident waiting to happen.

"We deemed the day a success and people were giving us the thumbs up in the morning as they appreciated what we were doing, and one resident actually hugged a PCSO and said we were so glad we were addressing it, so it had the desired effect."

Speed indication devices were used by officers and those caught travelling at 35mph or above in both locations were pulled over, given advice, warnings when necessary and an information leaflet which highlights the dangers of driving only slightly over the limit.

The leaflet, entitled Think! It's 30 For a Reason, explained the risk of death is approximately four times higher for a pedestrian who is hit by a car at 40mph than at 30mph.

Fatal accidents are also four times as likely on rural roads as in urban areas and fixed penalty notices, penalty points and driving bans are all likely outcomes for speeding.

Around 30 people were stopped near Halberton during the operation last Tuesday and a total of seven were caught travelling between 46 and 48mph, but the majority of passing vehicles were between 26 and 30mph.

Only around ten were stopped near Ashley and PC Rich said the traffic lights near the recycling centre had an impact and meant those who were likely to speed, were caught in a queue of slower moving drivers.

A total of three drivers were issued with £60 fines for not having valid MOT certificates, one motorist was reported for not wearing a seatbelt and another was given a 'producer' to prove they had insurance cover to drive the vehicle they had only just purchased.

PC Rich said the purpose of the operation was to educate drivers about their actions and added: "Hopefully the operation will send out a warning to people about what the consequences are of them driving over that.

"We want to reassure the public that we are addressing the areas of speeding that have been brought to our attention but we are also trying to make speeders aware of their actions."

It is refreshing in that the Police regarded this as being an "advice" exercise. Normally speed enforcement is perceived as a fund-raising exercise.
