Saunders issues a cautionary warning

Mark Saunders wants his Tiverton Town side to keep their feet on the ground ahead of a challenging run of Evo-Stik League fixtures, starting with Wimborne Town's visit on Saturday.

The Yellows, who are second in Division One South and West, recorded a 3-1 win at North Leigh on Tuesday, thanks to goals from Michael Nardiello, Joe Bushin and Andy Taylor.

Play-off hunting Wimborne will provide a stiff test of Tivvy's promotion aspirations, according to Saunders, who said: "We've still got a very hard month ahead. We've got Wimborne on Saturday and they beat North Leigh at the weekend so that will be a tough game, and we then have Poole and [leaders] Hungerford too.

"By the end of this month, I think we will have played every team currently in the top eight. The good thing is that we have taken points off almost all of them, and that is very encouraging. If you can take points off teams around you then you will climb the table."

Looking back at Tuesday's trip to Oxfordshire, Saunders said: "It was a cracking result and we thoroughly deserved it. We played them [North Leigh] off the park and put together some great stuff."

Bideford head into a big game against St Albans City at the Sports Ground on Saturday in a positive frame of mind.

It might have been a different story after they trailed 5-0 at St Neots Town in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier Division at the weekend. But enough pride was shown in the second half to convince manager Sean Joyce his side can win their relegation battle.

In the end, the Robins' fightback fell short in a 5-3 defeat, as St Neots held out under a barrage of late pressure.

Joyce said: "I think to myself, what will keep us in this league? We are a good, young honest team.

"At half-time we were dead and buried and we could have easily thrown the towel in, but I was proud of the lads in the end. It justified what we're trying to do.

"St Neots were so far in front at 5-0 up they thought they were playing testimonial football," Joyce added. "In the end, they were holding the ball in the corner. I said to the boys at half-time: 'Just go out there and win the second half'.

"We're not playing that badly, we just aren't getting any luck." Bideford slipped to second from bottom after Gosport Borough beat Banbury United 3-2 on Tuesday.
