TRIBUTES have been paid to a postman who collapsed and died on his round on Saturday as he battled to free his van from heavy snow.

John Bircham, of Dulverton, Somerset, suffered a suspected heart attack while on his rounds near East Anstey, a Royal Mail source said.

Royal Mail manager Ian Frankum, said Mr Bircham had been a postman for 24 years and worked at the Dulverton delivery office. "He was a valued member of staff. He will be sorely missed," he said.
