MID DEVON is the greenest local authority in the UK as many of its residents shun earth-destroying fossil fuels in favour of renewable energy.

Panels being installed
About 7 per cent of homes in the area surrounding Tiverton have solar panels, more than any other area in the whole of the UK.
This means residents in a staggering 2,301 out of 33,384 homes can turn on their lights and do their washing at no cost to them or the environment.
They also get paid a small amount from your energy company for any excess energy they export back to their grid.
A spokesperson form energy efficiency specialists, The Eco Experts, said:
"It is fantastic that Mid Devon is taking advantage of the free energy you can generate from solar panels. They are really leading the way and doing everything they can to stop using these planet destroying fossil fuels. On top of this they are also making money thanks to the Feed-in-Tariff.
"Devon and its surrounding counties have the ideal conditions for solar panels and we have noticed a lot of farmers in the south are using their land for solar farms. As energy bills look set to increase and increase, these savvy homeowners are doing all they can to avoid these huge costs.
"The cost of solar panels is continuing to drop, so it really is a fantastic investment, with a better return-on-investment than many banks."
Wrexham in Wales, North Somerset, South Hams in Devon and South Norfolk are the next four eco-friendly local authorities.

Comments
Great to hear that Tiverton and mid-Devon is really doing its bit for the environment by people installing solar panels on their roofs. But it's not just fitting the panels. To make the most of the energy, you need to adjust your regular daily routine. So avoid using a tumble drier and washing machine at night. Reduce tumble drier usage as much as possible by hanging clothes out on the line, and do your washing during the day to take advantage of the power generated by the solar panels. Similarly, if possible do your vacuum cleaning during the day. It's surprising that small changes to your lifestyle - and thinking smart - can really help the environment.
