A HISTORIC Tiverton building has been restored to its former glory.

The three-storey property known as Carlisle House at 12-16 Angel Hill was built in 1740 by the same architect who built properties in Southernhay behind Exeter Cathedral, comprises 13 flats and two shops and is a focal point in Tiverton's conservation area

Its position is prominent and, together with the Angel Guest House, frames the entrance to the central area of Tiverton.

The building had fallen into some disrepair and, following complaints from the leaseholders which ranged from damp and mould to water running down walls, Mid Devon District Council decided that something needed to be done.

Because of the extent of some of the repairs needed, a specialist surveyor was appointed. The Council's conservation, building control and private sector housing teams worked with the owner of the property to ensure that the refurbishment works were satisfactorily completed.

The residents of Carlisle House are delighted that their homes are now properly habitable again. In addition, some of the flats, which were previously unoccupied because of their poor condition, are now available for lease or rent.

Tina Christopher, one of the residents said: "we would like to thank everyone for all their help and assistance. This has brought a longstanding and difficult issue to a satisfactory result".

Councillor Paul Williams, who has been actively involved in getting this work done added: "This is an excellent example of the Council's services working together on a project for the good of the community.

"Bringing empty properties back into use is an area the Council is actively pursuing and is encouraging property owners to work with us to achieve this."

Wonderful news to hear something like this for a change, it is so much more common sense to make existing buildings habitable rather than keep on building new ones and leaving the old ones boarded up
