High school head is given prestigious regional award

THE HEAD of Tiverton High School has been named as the South West Secondary Headteacher of the Year.

Andrew Lovett won the prestigious accolade in the 2011 South West Teaching Awards.

He will now compete for the national title with the six winners from other regions in London in October.

The glittering award ceremony will be screened on BBC television.

Mr Lovett said: “I am very proud and honoured to receive this award.

“It’s clearly a reflection of a team effort from all the partners that underpin our school community.

“I’ve worked in a large number of schools but there is something very special about Tiverton.

“This award highlights the strong bond between the community and its school and, of course, leadership is

easy when there is such an exceptional team of staff and students.”

Tiverton chair of governors, Sue Robinson, said: “We are delighted Andrew has been awarded the Secondary Head Teacher of the Year for the South West region.

“Andrew has been recognised for his inspirational leadership. A variety of community members were involved in supporting this nomination, which acknowledges his commitment to teaching and leadership and improving the life chances of the next generation in our community.

“He joins a list of exceptional teachers who are the stars of education this year.”

Devon’s Cabinet member for schools and learning, Christine Channon, said: “Our warmest congratulations go out to Andrew Lovett who is doing an excellent job at Tiverton.

“This award is personal recognition for Andrew as well as all his staff, the students, governors and wider community of Tiverton High School.

“Devon’s heads, teachers and governors regularly feature in the Teaching Awards and this is another recognition of the quality of staff in our schools.”
