TIVERTON could be set to lose one of its clothes shops in the New Year following unsuccessful negotiations with the landlord about extending the soon-to-be expired lease.

QS in Bampton Street is one of the last remaining 'value clothing' stores in the town following the closure of Peacocks and Trade Secrets in the last 12 months.

The Gazette understands that a charity shop run by Children's Hospice South West is set to move into the premises in January.

There are already nine charity shops within the town centre and several other empty shop premises. The recently vacated Clinton Cards shop in Fore Street has now re-opened under the branding of Card Factory.

Children's Hospice South West has yet to confirm its plans.

Although I champion the wonderful volunteers, the revenue created for the charities themselves and the opportunity for local people to buy affordable items in these cash strapped times. Enough is enough !!!! I love this town and to see its heart being ripped out is really appalling. I dread the thought of yet another high street store leaving town and putting yet more local folk into unemployment. So much for Mary Portas initiative to revive our town centre. HUH !!! No more than 3 years ago you could get virtually everything you needed here in the town and now apart from some of the super independant traders that we have in Gold street my hand is being forced more and more (together with the scandalous car parking charges in town) to either buy goods on line or get into my car and drive elsewhere therefore putting more local folks jobs in jeopardy. The 9 charity shops we already have is enough we might as well rename the place Chariton and wait for the tumbleweed to roll down the street then the one horse left in town will probably up and die....
