DOZENS of tyres were illegally dumped on a road between Crediton and Bickleigh earlier this month.

The Council is appealing for witnesses following this serious fly tipping incident where up to 70 tyres were dumped on the lay-by opposite Lower Burrow Coombe Farm on the A3072.

This incident will need to be cleared up by the council who are appealing for help from the public to catch the offender.

Simon Newcombe Environmental Enforcement Manager said: ''Fly tipping blights our streets and countryside.

"We are doing everything we can to keep Mid Devon clean and green. Thanks to residents and visitors to Mid Devon contacting us, we currently deal on average with 20 incidents of fly-tipping a month - anything from a bin bag of rubbish to large quantities of construction waste dumped from trucks.

"We depend on the public to be 'the eyes and ears of the community' to let us know about fly tipping.

"As soon as we hear about it, we investigate for evidence and send one of our crews out to clear it up - and whenever we can we'll take action against those responsible.''

Anyone that has information about this incident is asked to contact the council on 01884 255255, all calls will be treated with confidence. The public can also email customerfirst@middevon.gov.uk

Fly-tipping is committing a criminal offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Anyone convicted would have a criminal record and face a fine of up to £50,000.
